SOLAR DECATHLON MIDDLE EAST 2021

Date: 2021-11-20

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, DEWA organises Solar Decathlon Middle East. This is one aspect of the partnership between DEWA and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy with the US Department of Energy. The contest challenges students to design and build sustainable solar-powered houses. The Solar Decathlon is an international competition created by the US Department of Energy where universities from all over the world meet to design, build and operate a grid-connected, solar powered house. The houses use solar power as the only energy source and are equipped with all the technologies that permit maximum energy efficiency. During the final phase of the competition teams assemble their houses in a main expo area, open to the general public, while undergoing the 10 contests of the competition, which is why this event is called Decathlon. (‘Deca’ derives from Greek and means ten). The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002 and previous additions have been organised in different areas including the US, Europe and China.
